Most days I find it difficult to fit everything I want and need to do into the time slots I have available for each activity. I have to work, clean the house and do the shopping etc. I also have about 10 books, great books, waiting for me to read them and I can hear them calling me all the time.
I want to spend many many hours practicing my yoga, improving, progressing and feeling great in my own skin. I want to spend time meditating and honing those skills, I want to spend more time blogging and creating recipes and food. I also want to spend as much time as I can creating memories and experiences with my son whilst I can and of course teaching my yoga classes too.
Trying to fit everything into one day can drive me crazy! It was even getting me down.. Then a little while ago I came across a podcast by a guy called Lewis Howes.
Lewis has a brilliant and exceptionally inspiring podcast that I recommend you have a listen to.
He was talking to one of his guests who mentioned something called G.E.B.Y. It stands for Gratitude, Exercise, Breakfast and You. I was curious as to how much of an effect it could have on my day so I decided to try it for 30 days.
So this is how it works - each morning before you get out of bed you think about these 4 things and how you're going to achieve them. Here are some of my examples:
Firstly I think about what I'm Grateful for. This could be as simple as having had a decent nights sleep, or that there was no traffic on the way to work, or having 5 minutes quiet time with a chai tea or coffee before work started etc. It could be anything. The trick is to be mindful of something/anything that's good in your life and feel grateful for it.
No one ever says "I wish I hadn't exercised today"! Do some sort of exercise every day. Do 5 push-ups, go for a walk, take a yoga class, go for a run... anything that floats your boat. It can be as small as 5 minutes, but do one bit of exercise every day.
I cannot tell you how much I enjoy my breakfast. It is the most important meal of your whole day. It sets up the rest of the day in terms of what food you're going to eat, what mood you're going to be in, how you feel generally and if you eat the right stuff it can make you feel fantastic!
I have about 5 different breakfasts that I know I look forward to and I have one of those every morning. It could be some buckwheat pancakes with agave and bananas, or oatmeal with chia seeds, maca powder and honey, a green smoothie or as simple as almond butter on GF toast. Don't skimp on the best meal of the day though!
I try to do one thing for myself every single day. Most days I manage to do just one and it makes the world of difference. As a single parent the days can be long and exhausting trying to fit everything in but I've found the key to my success is making sure I do one thing specifically for me. This could be meditating, yoga, reading my book, calling a close friend or make some delicious dinner for Drew and I.
You know what? after 30 days I found that these 4 things made the world of difference to how successful my day is and how great I feel. Its about adding some mindfulness to each day and make sure they don't go by in a blur. Also on the days that I meditate to go to sleep or meditate generally and add in a bit of yoga makes me feel incredible!
So, I hope you give it a go - see what you think... and if you get some good results email me, leave me a comment or tweet me @dawncaller. I would love to hear if these 4 things make a difference to your life too :)
